BMW has released the first official images and video of its radical i3 and i8 cars, due on sale in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

The first cars to be built under the German carmaker’s new ‘BMW i’ sub brand, the pure electric i3 and plug-in hybrid i8 are being touted as a “revolution in car design”. One major talking point is the use of carbon-fibre in their construction – an extremely light yet strong material used in Formula One racing – which will help counter the typically heavy weight of the batteries. That weight reduction should aid handling and improve electric driving range.

The two cars are still officially only in the concept stage, but we have already seen disguised prototypes being put through their paces in winter testing (i3 here and i8 here), so handling and performance preparations are already pretty far down the road. However, until now we haven’t had more than a sneak peak of the concept images. These new pictures give us a much better idea of what to expect from the production cars.

Read on for a quick summary of both cars and to see stunning exterior and interior images and video.

BMW i3 concept

The i3 is a pure electric car, meaning it’s powered solely by an electric motor connected to a large lithium ion battery. BMW claims a range of 150km (93 miles), which is the same as the currently available Mitsubishi i-MiEV. However, the i3 wipes the floor with the Japanese car in the performance stakes – 167hp versus just 67hp!

BMW says the i3’s carbon-fibre construction means it saves between 250 and 350kg in weight, and that it can reach 62mph in just eight seconds. That makes the i3 nearly twice as accelerative as the i-MiEV.
