BMW   India   2012  -  BMW   India   enhances   capacity to 11,000 units per annum BMW India, the largest luxury car maker in the Indian market, said on Thursday that it has enhanced the total output at its Chennai plant to 11,000 units. The capacity of the Chennai plant has been increased with the help of second shift that commenced in June 2011. The company had increased its capacity to 10,000 units per annum in March this year in a single shift. Speaking to reporters in Pune, BMW India President Andreas Schaaf said, "We have expanded our production facility by starting the second shift of production. The production has been expanded to 11,000 units annually from 10,000 units." He added that if needed the company can add another assembly line, or it can increase the output of the second shift and even add another production site. BMW 2011 -BMW extends US luxury car lead Bayerische Motoren Werke AG's BMW brand outsold Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz last month, expanding its lead as the top-selling luxury auto brand in the US so far this year. BMW's US sales, helped by deliveries of the new five Series sedan and sport-utility vehicles, rose 13 per cent last month to 21,637 compared with a year earlier, the Munich-based carmaker said last week in a statement. Mercedes sales rose 13 per cent to 20,652 in June while deliveries by Toyota's Lexus fell 38 per cent to 10,773, as the Japanese make lacked inventory following the March 11 earthquake that disrupted manufacturing. After six months of sales, BMW looks poised to outsell Lexus in the US for a calendar year for the first time since 1997. BMW's sales through June rose 13 per cent to 113,705.
